Mechanism of Structure-Driven Nonlinear Instability of Double Tearing Mode in Reversed Magnetic Shear Plasmas

چکیده
The trigger for the nonlinear destabilization of the double tearing mode (DTM), referred to as a structuredriven instability leading to explosive growth and subsequent collapse, is investigated. We use the reduced MHD equations that solve the evolution of perturbations from an equilibrium deformed by two-dimensional magnetic islands during the slow evolution of the quasi-steady nonlinear regime. By examining conditions near marginal stability (under which the explosive growth is not triggered), we have identified a new secondary instability that starts growing when the magnetic energy of the primary fluctuations associated with the islands reaches a critical level. The energy source of this instability is different from that of the linear DTM; it originates in the spatial deformation due to the DTM-driven magnetic islands and is responsible for the subsequent nonlinear destabilization. The growth rate of this secondary instability is found to be proportional to the magnetic energy, suggesting that it exhibits modulational characteristics.

Plasma Rotation Effects on the Trigger of Reversed Shear Plasma Disruptions
Plasma rotation effects on the trigger and evolution of MHD modes in a reversed shear profile are studied by nonlinear MHD simulations. It is found that, in rotating plasma, magnetic islands formed around inner and outer magnetic resonant surfaces, which are stable for the tearing mode, by an external perturbation, (driven magnetic island) evolve with different growth rates during an initial gr...

Current-driven tearing instabilities dominate magnetic relaxation in self-organized high temperature plasmas such as the reversed field pinch (RFP) and spheromak. In the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) RFP experiments, they are observed in the form of magnetic field, flow velocity, and current density fluctuations that follow a temporally cyclic sawtooth behavior. During a sawtooth crash, a surge...

Gradient-driven instabilities and the subsequent nonlinear evolution of generated vortices in sheared E X B flows are investigated for magnetized plasmas with and without gravity (magnetic curvature) and magnetic shear by using theory and implicit particle simulations. In the linear eigenmode analysis, the instabilities considered are the Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability and the resistive int...

In this study, nonlocal nonlinear instability and the vibration of a double carbon nanotube (CNT) system have been investigated. The Visco-Pasternak model is used to simulate the elastic medium between nanotubes, on which the effect of the spring, shear and damping of the elastic medium is considered. Both of the CNTs convey a viscose fluid and a uniform longitudinal magnetic field is applied t...

This paper reviews various global instabilities destabilized by tangential neutral beam injection (NBI) in the Large Helical Device (LHD) plasmas. These global modes are toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs), which are also observed in tokamak plasmas, and helicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (HAEs) which are observed only in three-dimensional plasmas such as LHD plasmas. Moreover, reversed magnetic ...
